I have put fresh baking soda package in refrigerator; I have washed down the refrigerator and freezer with a bleach solution but the smell is still there.
Pull frig out and clean behind and clean drip pan also. Wash inside and outside with vinegar. Then box of baking soda!! If the frig. is old I would buy a new one!!
Try untreated charcoal. Place some newspaper on a shelf and add some charcoal briquets that are not treated with starter of any kind. Leave for a few days. the charcoal will absorb the smell.
You must have a lot of patience to research, plan and write this kind of solid information. Your article has several good observations with which I can relate. Thank you.
It’s not exactly normal for me to read this kind of subject matter, but this caught my attention as soon as I read the first sentence. Thank you so much.

Is there a "drip pan" under the fridge (older models)? you may need to clean that too.

Wash it with baking soda in water, or leave an open dish of vinegar or lemon juice in it.
